I can’t say I knew him, but as a fellow Boston record store cryptid our paths would cross. He would wander the aisles (mostly at Looney Tunes, where he sorta-worked), monologuing to himself or whoever drifted close enough. I once got a tight five on the addictive properties of Diet Coke.

The last time I saw Monoman was a few months ago, at a benefit in his honor with a bunch of fellow ‘70s Boston scene notables. He joined Mission of Burma for a cover of “1970” by the Stooges, only he just kept repeating the “Out of my mind!” part over and over.

He was wearing a pair of oversized sunglasses and a ridiculous black wig. I assumed it was because he was in chemo, but then it flew off and he still had the same hair he always had. Classic Monoman.
