Zeus: Damn it...Achilles is out of control. He is going to win the war too early and spoil the surprise. Somebody go get Priam to make him ashamed.

One thing that bugs me about not having Aethiopia is I really would like to know how Achilles conducted himself after Hector.

I think Madeline Miller gives a very plausible modern version in Song of Achilles. But I would also really like to have seen the ancient take.

The one episode that stands out, adapted into a classic play by Kleist, is Penthesilea, the Amazon Warrior who fights for Troy. Achilles kills her but then sees her body and thinks she’s hot and regrets killing her and then murders a fellow Greek soldier for saying mean things. 1/

But Achilles never changed. If you read the encounter in the Underworld in Homer’s Odyssey, first he gives that famous bit that he’d rather be alive as a child of a peasant than king of dead but then he says he wishes he was still alive killing people and is happy to hear of his son’s war crimes. 2/

Dramatically he should have died shortly after Hector. Because the character doesn’t make sense or have anything to do there. 3
