A ban on surveillance pricing—using people's private data to set prices—is already setting off the big retail and grocery companies, which bought Seattle Times banner ads and are sending mass texts to convince consumers it's in our best interest to let companies mine our data to decide what we pay.

Capitalism depends upon competition and price transparency. This is not Capitalism but monopoly.

Wait until you learn what the inevitable outcome of competition is.

Add banning the collection, analyzing; and installation of biometrics technologies to the heap of things to.ban.

Oh THAT’S who sent me a vague lobbying text to me this morning complaining about the mayor. I knew it smelled like corporate bullshit

🤬...Makes me wonder how much information there is available out there about me???

We knew this kind of s*** was coming.

Save on groceries, EAT THE RICH!

"you don't understand! we raise the prices for everyone and then we give discounts to people who can't afford our new higher prices! that's a discount, not an upcharge! it's good actually!"

I hate this. My local Fred Meyer installed digital tags so o won’t shop there anymore.

Oh no, seriously? I've been "visiting" them by Instacart for the last little while, so I didn't know. I s'pose there's still Costco, but sometimes you don't need ten pounds of bananas at a time, you know?

The mayor is coming for your Safeway Points!

The logic they use must be first rate. Let gouge you, you deserve it. 🤮🙄😵‍💫💰🖕

Surveillance pricing takes price gouging customers to a whole new level of evil. Of course corporate oligarchs don't want us to fight for consumer protections from their latest wealth extraction scheme.

To some extent, it's reassuring that the industry can't come up with a better argument than "you'll lose your coupons".

I can't get the ad to come up for me (after disabling my ad blocker, all I'm seeing are ads for tech firms with names like "Databilify" and a company trying to sell "award-winning luxury diapers" but here's a screenshot I received:

I mainly shop at winco, which uses physical tags still. They dont have a typical sale, things are just priced every week. They will change frequently, but its the same price for everyone.

Surveillance pricing means different people are charged different prices for the same thing based on how much a company can think it can get from a specific person in a specific situation. epic.org/issues/consu...

Got this earlier today.

I just got text spam about this. I didn't know what it was referencing. Thanks for the information.

Ответ для Erica C. Barnett

I got a text from that group! I deleted it and reported it as spam.

You know, maybe it’s time to create new grocery store loyalty cards with fresh random data

I also got a text this morning.

Ответ для BestBets

Same! I deleted it and reported it as junk lol

I already got a deranged text about this this morning. They're so scared!

Oh that’s why I got a text about the mayor trying to take away our precious grocery store rewards

Fuck these capitalist pigs!

Safeway does this on their app and it’s insane how often the prices change

Who is the swing voter who sees a banner ad and is like, “these are my principles now…”

Ohhhh! I got the text message and couldn’t figure out what they were even talking about, but also decided that they were probably on the wrong side of the issue 😅

Maybe they could try giving more value for the money, instead of preying on us.

Time to game the algorithm.

Nope.

Don't stop there, make a ban on surveillance

Kroger said the main attraction to merging with Albertsons would be having the largest pool of consumer data in the country.

Fun fact: Kroger and Schnucks grocery do not compete in the Midwest. If your town has one, the other won't open a location. The only exciting is Ruler, which is Kroger's Aldi competitor. I'm not accusing them of collusion. But, let's be honest here.

Surely you aren't implying the Northwest Retail Grocery Association has anything in mind but the budgets of hardworking Seattleites?

Does this mean that Jeff Bezos has to pay 3.1 million dollars for a carton of eggs? It is it just to statistically calculate the exact PSI to squeeze to get the blood out of the stone?
