Had the odd comment mentioning “sentimentality” in the Sony piece and listen: sentimentality is the point. Part of this is just about the fact we’re losing one of the final touchpoints of another world. It’s right to want to rage against that.

That world is basically gone, but it’s still true. There are all the very valid consumer rights points and the knock-on externalities and all that. And then there’s also the fact that physical things that link humans to other humans are just better for the soul. It’s ok to mourn that!

We had no trouble making deep connections to stories & music & to each other in the days before mechanical reproduction. Arguably we're better off NOT attaching our deepest feelings to an ownable fetish object.
