A smouldering fire in Glenasmole in Dublin reignited overnight after a change in wind direction helped the fire find new fuel. It crossed the Featherbeds and down into Glencree in Wicklow. Strap in for wildfire stats🧵 #Climate #Wildfire #Speirgorm

Previous fires here have been smoke monitored. The pink blocks are when wildfires happened. The dark line is the amount of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers in diameter recorded in Tallaght. The orange line is PM2.5 for Glencree.

PM2.5 is small enough when inhaled to pass through the lungs into the blood stream. It causes cardio and respiratory diseases and is linked to lung cancer. The WHO says the 15 micrometer limit shouldn’t be exceeded more than three days a year.

When and where the most wildfires occurred, by county and year. Killarney National Park being responsible for Kerry’s clear lead.

Months with most wildfires. April and May might still be wet, but drier January and February combined with longer growing season has created more tinder dry undergrowth.

How much land burned? 31,000ha in 2015 is the record year so far. But there’s no reliable record before that. For context that’s almost 1000 average Irish farms.

What burned? This is fascinating. What burned the most was not gorse and heather, but farmed grassland. Followed by those enduring fires that get down in to the peat.

If you converted the emissions from each year’s fires into the equivalent emissions from a car, how many cars are we talking about? (The dark blue bar on the right is the one you want to look at.)

All this data is taken from research lead by Dr Fiona Cawkwell in UCC for the EPA. Whole report here: www.epa.ie/publications...

Interesting to compare with stats from the European Forest Fires Info Service - which only counts fires >30ha

The FLARES study was recording everything above an acre. I must get to the bottom of the grassland thing. Wonder if it’s uplands heath converted to grassland. Also worth noting 50% of wildfires were on designated land according to this study.
