The FLARES study was recording everything above an acre. I must get to the bottom of the grassland thing. Wonder if it’s uplands heath converted to grassland. Also worth noting 50% of wildfires were on designated land according to this study.

Upland (and wetland/peatland) molinia grass is the late flowering grass and only grass in Ireland that is deciduous in winter shedding its leaves into a pale cream white dry flammable layer of thatch burned to help the green shoots each spring underneath.

Yes, I assume it’s Molinia. But the category is “heavily improved grassland” and that’s not how I’d describe pasture that cattle graze for two months and sheep for three.

I see, its bit of a mystery so. Maybe its a function of the accuracy of the classification.
