This has probably been said before but it warrants being said again: In these types of layoffs, what happens to all the juniors? This industry cannot survive without cultivating the talent of our upcoming fresh developers. What cause do they have to pursue a career this volatile?

What hope do they have to compete against their superiors who are being constantly recycled by these corporations and reentering the job market? How do they have the confidence they can land on their feet even if they get their first foot in the door if they get laid off?

Many are going indie, but that is not a sustainable solution. Funding is slim, many are working just for credit, and that can only last so long before they must career pivot to other industries.

Some say that stating "the game industry is dying" is overly dramatic, but as someone who was one of the first victims of its volatility, and who welcomes and works with many more, hope is hard to keep at hand. If indies are the solution we need to develop better and more supportive systems.

Thousands of people are being cut from this industry year after year, and increasingly unrealistic goals are placed on the already heavy shoulders of the survivors. I worry to think what happens to them when these goals remain unreached. Where will we go then?

Video games are touted as one of the most profitable industries in the world. Hemorrhaging its talent in order to bolster reporting numbers is entirely short-sighted. Our juniors are being scared off and left to their own devices. Even though times are hard and resources seem scarce, help them.

Offer them mentorship, give them a team to work on, a title to add to their portfolio, something they can start developing their skills with. This industry cannot survive without them, and these days they cannot survive without community and opportunity.

If the biggest corporations in the world cannot sustain the juniors, we must. We will weather this storm together, but only if we champion one another.
