Can I ask, why do you think verse has its place? I don't understand the reason for this programming language to begin with. What's wrong with c++ or using something more practical like Lua?

Verse is networked by default. The scripts you write “just work” in the online environment without you needing to write server-client logic. Depending on your goals this may or may not be meaningful to you, but it’s a big boon for people wanting to make multiplayer experiences.

By comparison, to get similar functionality with Lua, you’d need to write an entire layer of network logic for every function you expose. That’s all done for you here already. Or at least, that’s the hope.

This is why not everything is exposed with Verse yet. Someone has to create the underlying logic behind its library and make it bulletproof.

Will it be successful this way? No idea! I prefer making single player games, especially adventure games and RPGs, so for my goals Verse has very limited utility.

One big advantage to it, though, will be its ability to be diffed in version control since the base language is text. 😅 Blueprint will never not struggle in that environment.

I mean, you can copy BP nodes and they copy to text. I've never understood why Epic didn't make an "export to text" variant of Blueprints that just used the copy-paste system to basically make a big dump of the blueprint in text form. It'd be slow, but solve merge issues

I think the hope was that the in-editor version control integration and diffing tools would pick up the slack, but I’m not sure that’s worked out in practice. One big problem with the text conversion is that it uses a proprietary format, not something portable like JSON.

Great insights, thanks for sharing. My honest take away from verse is that it's designed to work with their Fortnite ecosystem. I have my own very strong opinions on Unreal Engine and Fortnite, but I think that their focus on Fortnite is killing their brand tbh

They've done a lot of damage to the ecosystem of Unreal Engine. They dismantled the forums and merged it with the Fortnite ones. UEFN is an obsession of theirs. Now, teasing getting rid of BPs for.... Fortnite's programming language. Just lol. Oh, and Epic Games Store flopping wasn't a good thing 🤭
