When 620K free felt practically unlimited memory. For your latest game find, half the battle was winning the war against drivers, TSR and CONFIG.SYS. The other half was actually playing the game. Modern software is more like: "need 2 GB just to open it." Photo shot in my studio

"640k ought to be enough for anybody"

Sure:)

😂 Not when your app needs to keep sending 32K buffers to a tape drive, or it pauses, back ups and has to restart. CD burning was worse, and you made a coaster, and why memory, and managing it well, was so critical to us, in the highest volume Backup App, of the 90s and early 2000s.

Well, yes, Bill was full of crap wasn't he?

🤔 I'm not sure it was Bill Gate's fault, since IBM designed the PC, then went to him for software because, in the dumbest business decision ever, by Digital Research, led by Gary Kildall, they couldn't reach agreement with IBM to license CP/M to them.

I saw Bill Gates speak once, around 2000, at a Dev Conference, where they had a flashy "rollout" of Microsoft Auto, that never went anywhere. I was at Microsoft a few times, because our app was in Win98, as the Backup App. It helped us because they had strict QA policies, we then adopted.😂

I remember going from a 286 to a 386 and thinking "there's no way people can play games at this speed".

Would you mind testing the MS DOS build of my game's demo? It probably works best on at least a 486 (I've only tested things in DOSBOx-X) You start the demo by running Tomasz.bat www.kickstarter.com/projects/hap...

Update 12: Now Live: MS DOS Demo! · Tomáš: King of Rejection (PC, AtariST, Amiga, N64, DreamcastAs I'm putting the final touches to the N64 demo*, I'd just like to inform those interested in the MS DOS version that this particular version is now live** and can be found in the download section of...www.kickstarter.com

Hey I grew up with that exact machine, right down to the keyboard and monitor! Except we bumped it up to 8mb of ram and added a 2x CD rom.

If only IBM had chosen the Motorola 68000 instead.

It would have been a lot more expensive. IBM felt the 16 bit 8086 was too expensive.

According to Wikipedia, IBM (or at least IBM engineers) wanted to use the 68000, but didn't think Motorola could supply them in sufficient volume.

I sort of remember that IBM required Intel to have a second producer of the 8088 and that's how AMD got in the game.

I don't recall that, but sounds reasonable.

Retrobits has a good youtube video explaining the Intel/AMD x86...thing (for lack of a better word)

I'm constantly astounded by how inefficient programs are now. 140MB for sudoku on android recently. Most of it is probably all the tracking and advertising subroutines.

Aaiiieeee. I haven’t heard TSR and in decades. Now I’m having horrible flashbacks! 😜

TSR! How long since I've seen that! ;-) My first was a 'choir' TSR that ran on our 'new' 2000, a 186 based word processor at NBI. I had 6 2000s 'linked' together with TSRs to play music. It was a hit at our demo show.

The “good old days”… good times!

"...and we walked uphill, barefoot in the snow to get to that 620K, and we liked it that way!" ;-)

‘PC Tools’ was a TSR that I used all the time. Those were the days. :-)

I remember when I picked up a memory expansion board for my 8088 XT clone, going from 640 to 1024KB. It was incredible having that much memory to run DOS 3.3 I was doing LISP and PROLOG programming at the time while in school so having more resources was always better. :-)

I went to download minesweeper from the ubuntu store--85MB. Eighty FIVE?? For MINESWEEPER??

Modern computers are all fluff to handle graphics quickly.
