This is true for having labels for different groups ... sets up us vs. them, also influences perceptions and making assumptions about people because of labels instead of getting to know them better. That is the whole purpose of labels to put people in boxes and expect them to behave in certain ways

Uh-huh… Well Gen Alpha can’t read nor write nor count or even knows the order of the alphabet- yes even those in High School and COLLEGE. And I’m blaming the iPad “Parenting” of the Millennial Generation.

Maybe chicken-and-egg, but I feel that public culture is affected by news and entertainment in a major way. When a generation's daily dose of culture normalizes something - like the spin, schlock, and schadenfreude of the late 80s/early 90s for example - exposure will stratify worldviews.

I think the shift from a focus on equality to one of diversity and equity was a mistake. Again, it focuses on difference rather than emphasising what people share.

Generally they're supposed to be descriptive in retrospect rather than assigned in advance that way. Also not really so hard-and-fast when upbringing and what one was exposed to could vary by region and ccircumstance.

It made sense to discuss the huge post WWII surge in births as a “baby boom” and to call the children born then Baby Boomers—especially as the sheer number of them altered and distorted the economy every decade, through no fault of their own. 1/2: I understand the desire to not want to divide gens, but my formative years were the 80s, a time of $ and int’l strength. My son was 5yo during 9-11, very different formative years. The silent gen grew up post Depression and WWII.

Agree. Each generation has changes, challenges, advancements & set backs. It’s more helpful to see things on a continuum than to isolate times into generational nicknames. It’s artificial and divisive.

I heard yesterday someone refer to the next gen as Alpha gen ?Are we going to start this crap all over again ? I no longer wish to be called a boomer ,I declare myself a Doomer! And when many blame the boomers for our troubles, I blame all those gens that came after and gave us this administration !

The post-war baby boom peaked ~20 years later, in 1964. I guarantee that if you were born then, your life experience and outlook are worlds away from someone born in '46. To make sweeping generalizations about 76 million people seems awfully silly.

It's should really just boil down to BIG things. Like... Anyone alive who never used a rotary telephone... They're the new people. Old people used a rotary phone to call people. Before that split, it was probably Automobiles. Those two splits are MAJOR shifts in how we lived.

These are all market segments to begin with. Target markets for products and services. That's all these groupings signify. Any other interpretation is meaningless. All they have in common is that they are in a life stage that makes them more likely to desire what I'm selling.
