Touchscreens in cars are not a customer convenience feature. They are a manufacturer cost-cutting feature.

That sounds like a good idea then?

they are also inherently dangerous

Genau

And they're dangerous and annoying

Its a good thing that touchscreens and control cables NEVER EVER have technical problems or just break.

The Chinese are wayyyyy ahead of you... www.independent.co.uk/cars/electri...

Car makers got touchscreens wrong – and China is fixing it firstChina has ordered car makers to bring back physical buttons for 19 safety-critical functions – and even VW admits it got carried away with “spaceship” interiors. Steve Fowler explores the return of th...www.independent.co.uk

They cut cost but increase price tag.

Touchscreens in cars are a driver distraction issue. You can't fumble blindly by feel to turn the volume or the temperature down while still watching the road. How is it safe? How is it legal?

We want BUTTON, DIALS, AND HANDLES

Yes.

And they're cheesy, cheap, and fall apart. And they're dangerous.

Because car manufacturers can now design basics around screens instead of actually design interiors, plus the screens are inexpensive.

I have an idea - let's drive 75 mph while negotiating six levels on a touchscreen to adjust the AC. It's impossible to comprehend how f'ng moronic that design is!

I just upgraded from a 2024 Ioniq 5 to a 2026 Ioniq 5 and the biggest improvement was the controls that moved out of the touchscreen and into buttons and nobs. All the climate controls are easy, volume, seat heaters, almost everything I need and would get frustrated about is now a physical control.

Ответ для jasoniscursed

A number of car makers are putting basic controls for radio/media and heater/climate back to buttons and knobs. I believe the EU is introducing design standards that vehicles that mandates a list of manual controls (buttons/knobs/stalks) that have to be to the driver.

A lot of stuff the manufacturers put in cars are “cost-cutting.” First up, companies like GM & Ford are actually primarily money lenders. Second; all cars are intended primarily to sell, and whether or not they actually fulfill the needs of consumers is a lesser priority.

100% correct. Shouldn't be legal to put controls deep into a touchscreen.

And a safety hazard

Not if the prices of chips keep going up - thank the data centers

China is already mandating real buttons, because they're not as corrupt as the US.

If it’s not mechanical I don’t want it

Cool smartphone.

Ответ для Mace Moneta

Seriously I’d gladly take my Motorola cell phone back from the 90’d

Most importantly they’re a safety hazard.

If it feels like a skilled hacker can take control of the vehicle at any moment, I don't want it.

Funny how using phones in cars is illegal, but using the touch screen provided isn't?!

And a road safety hazard.

You can be ticketed for using your smart phone whilst driving. What's the difference groping for the air-conditioning icon on a touchscreen?

As was true when Apple took away physical home buttons on iPhones, it dispenses with a useful hard-coded feature to give you unlimited choices -- but in this case, it's behind the wheel, thus creates the same danger as texting while driving, and as a bonus lays the foundation for unwanted adverts.

And, as much of a distraction as a cell phone. So when a driver has an accident because they were trying to turn the temperature down in their vehicle on their touchscreen, the manufacturer should be sued.

It's a deliberate distraction from looking out of the front window :-(

Agree, plus they provide simpler assembly. But then why are new cars so expensive?

Maybe they assume everyone wants to 'talk' to their car and all surrounding appliances. I do not.

And an accident-inducing feature. Talk about distracted driving. Insurance companies must really like them.

I’m no conspiracy theorist but……

can we cut this crap......People wanted touch screen, People LIKE YOU want to make the Manufacturers the bad guys again and again and again. Get a clue and get a life. Manufacturers try to appease the customer and people LIKE YOU want to make it something else.

For sure. You have to look at the fucking screen to adjust things. No knobs or levers you can feel

Hi does it save money for the manufacturer?

Ответ для I believe in Mr. Greve

These days I would say yes. Screens used to be expensive but now they are quite cheap. They anyway need some multimedia and map display. Then it's just a matter of adding everything there through software rather than placing buttons and levers. Given enough quantity software becomes much cheaper.

Ответ для MariusC

Why do you think Tesla puts everything on that screen including ridiculous features like gear shifting?

Ответ для MariusC

Because Elon Musk likes the idea of controlling everyone's cars and removing their ability to control parts of their car through a software update instead of having dedicated buttons to dedicated functions?

Ответ для 🍧Meat Popsicle🍧

Maybe that too but I think it's about money too. Every button and knob costs on every car. A touchscreen option costs once and that's it

Ответ для I believe in Mr. Greve

Huh, I didn’t know that touch screens were cheaper. Thanks for teaching me something.

Ответ для I believe in Mr. Greve

This is social media ppl can say anything it doesn’t matter if it’s true. But yes in social media world a 200 dollar digital screen is cheaper than .05 plastic button and .20 electronic components to make it work.

Ответ для Unknown

The button itself is cheaper but then you have to wire them all independently, which is what makes it more expensive. You don’t have to trust the OP. A quick google search validates what they said. One search result, among many: www.thedrive.com/news/touch-c...

Touch Controls Are 50% Cheaper Than Real Buttons, Ferrari CEO Says"If you have to make all these nice, beautiful, crafted buttons, you [need tooling]," Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna said.www.thedrive.com
Ответ для I believe in Mr. Greve

“Ferrari CEO says…. “. Yes Ferrari the well known mass market manufacturer of practical and cost effective consumer vehicles. FYI touch screen interfaces still require wiring to components and typically also additional sensors to provide feedback to the cpu, power relay switches etc. Not cheaper.

Ответ для north52

Yeah, I was looking for Toyota or Hyundai to say this not Ferrari. What we are really learning is that the touchscreens made it easier for manufacturers to software lock basic features behind subscription fees. At this point they can do it with buttons now too. So back to the cheaper buttons

Ответ для Unknown

Manufacturers had the ability to “lock” vehicle function as soon as they went to ECU modules with immobilizer tech. Cars still had tactile controls then. Screens more of a planned obsolescence move to make cars into appliances with a subscription fee revenue stream, IMHO.

Ответ для Unknown

You're completely ignoring the labor it takes to put in those buttons and wires. $200 is cheaper than paying a mechanic to run wires and install buttons.

Ответ для Unknown

Touchscreens don't cost OEMs $200 - they're essentially free. Because cars must have backup cameras, repurposing the display as a control center for various systems (audio, nav, hvac) saves a ton on other assemblies (controls and displays for those systems) and simplifies the wiring harness.

Ответ для Unknown

A switch/button that will reliably survive 10,000 or so operations (I don't know what vehicle manufacturers require, but it shouldn't be fewer than that) is *not* a 5c component, even with manufacturer sized economies of scale.

Ответ для I believe in Mr. Greve

Every single part of a vehicle has a logistic tail that is huge. every part needs people to move it, store it, install it, reorder etc.

Ответ для I believe in Mr. Greve

A physical switch needs to be sourced, warehoused, transported to a specific point on the production line, have time/staff allocated and trained to fit it/test it. It all adds up, and is further complicated if it is only fitted to certain trim levels, or in different places for different markets...

Ответ для Captain Sidecar

Multiply that by the many different functions in a modern car.*Much* cheaper to do it all in a single operation to install the screen interface, and one more to upload all the software.

Also a bit of a designer "Lookit me I'm making everything all futuristic like in 'Star Trek,' 'cuz this is Progress and everything has to look new!" feature.

I think Elon's original rationale for popularizing them was that they made perfect sense for a passenger in a self-driving car.

most dangerous development in driving for last 10 years. mobile phones distraction, touch screens just bigger and more intrusive. Had a volvo with one and nearly crashed more times than other 25 cars owned and driven...

Buy a Chevy, it has buttons in addition to touchscreen. Also stayed the on the road better than Subaru last snowstorm I drove in, yes, you read that correctly. Nobody should be buying the Teslas

and a road hazard

Actually a design defect in most cases. Consumers not given an option and it provided manufacturers with a path to increase prices/profits. Try finding a replacement screen for a 10 year old vehicle. Accelerating vehicle write offs so dealers benefit. Number of IC/CPU modules in new cars is dumb

Ответ для north52

The cd player in my 2016 highlander has been broken since I bought it used. I wish it was like the old days where I could hop over to Circuit City and pop a new one in for $100 😭 But I have to replace the whole unit which is $300 on ebay, plus labor to do it!

Ответ для Leah

There is probably a cheap hack / alternative for that. Also local auto salvage if you have one?

Ответ для north52

That's a really good idea! I'll ask my mechanic if he can find one. He must have a connection to a junkyard because he very nicely offers used parts when he can 🩷

Ответ для north52

Agree - local auto salvage is the best way to get a replacement part like that

the modules fucking kill me ...My hvac system has so many modules & actuators it's ridiculous ...what I wouldn't give for a few levers and cables ...I'm seriously close to making a dam cable operated system with a couple levers ....

No, they aren't. They are a marketing feature. And people loved them for years and bought high tech cars. If enough people want knobs, they will be a marketing feature.

Ответ для J.S.Humbacher

On mine there is no fumbling. For many features I use voice. And the GPS? Tell me this old way was more safe??

I have a Subaru and the touchscreen is a nightmare. It was clearly designed by an incompetent who had no understanding he was not designing a handheld tablet. Important buttons are tiny, important information is located at the bottom of the screen, forcing you to take your eyes fully off the road.

Ответ для captainfrogbert

Useless buttons are randomly interspersed among buttons you need on the road (radio, phone, climate). important controls are buried multiple menus deep. It's the worst UI I have ever seen. And utterly inapproproaite for a moving vehicle.

Ответ для captainfrogbert

I have an older Subaru and test drove a new one, I briefly noticed this while searching the climate system. Huge dealbreaker for me

Ответ для captainfrogbert

Along with Amazon Fire sticks, the Suburu touchscreens are the slowest and glitchiest tech items we own. Perhaps they could have spent an additional $2 on a central processor that was designed sometime after the 1980s.

And lets not forget the data mining.

And a dangerous distraction.

It's easier to wire a touchscreen than each button. And we already know the distraction isn't safe.

Expensive and unnecessary Bling that drives up the cost of Cars. Let me watch my favorite TV show while I drive. Really? What could possibly go wrong? The Car manufacturers are Greedy as Hell!

The whole computer interface for my 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe sport failed over the course of a couple of years. As it turned out, it was extremely common and the dealership had no solution for it but to replace the entire thing for $5000. The car was worth $10,000.

Cost-cutting? More like profit-increasing.

Sometimes I feel like my mom's 2018 Hyundai Kona is the peak of non-EV automotive technology. Buttons and knobs for the radio and air conditioning. CarPlay/Android Auto. Backup camera. Blindspot detection. But no annoying tech like touch screen everything. No reinventing what already works.

To be clear, I regularly drive my girlfriend's 2024 Corolla Cross. Good car, bad AC controls. Okay, I was able to use voice commands to have Google tell me how to fix an AC issue I was having while at a light, but I would rather just use intuitive controls. I work in IT and have a degree in it btw
