The effect was not so great though, they still managed to remain richer than their island neighbor. Japan currently has a similar debt size proportionally to their economy btw.

Donald Trump used to tell a story about how he walked past a homeless person with his daughter. He pointed at the homeless person and said "he's wealthier than me" because he was deeply in debt at the time. That is what your comparison between Japan and Haiti sounds like. You understand why, right?

A developed country has things to leverage. An underdeveloped country does not. Their positions are in no way comparable.

Anyways, my point is that Haiti *really* started to diverge economically from the rest of the world, *after* its debt had already been paid off. Something happened, and it wasn't the debt.
