so he’s just sitting with the New Wave kids at lunch now, and since this is 1980 that means a tetchy, tentative, and hitless platter, if still quite listenable. they’re figuring out how to transform the texture into a sound, and with the benefit of hindsight you can see where they’re going.

four albums of good-to-great worldly funk lead here, where he leaps over punk and into the new wave with both feet. somehow winds up with something not completely dissimilar to what the Talking Heads were up to at that moment - a more horned-up Remain in Light, if you will. he’s on his way now.
