Anyone have suggestions on a good mini vacation place within a 4ish hour drive of Baltimore where good weather is not necessary?

Cooperstown.

Ответ для Dodgers17

eh, apparently that's 5-ish hours

Ответ для Dodgers17

Yeah 5.5 from our address which is very doable in the future but not what we're planning for this time

Ответ для Dodgers17

Think that's a little further out than we're looking for this time but thanks!

When you are ready, Cooperstown is lovely in the Fall.

Hershey?? There’s a lot more to do than just the park. Plus depending on when you go it’s 30 minutes from the PA ren faire

Ответ для Liz - High and Inside

Say more, please

Ответ для Blaze-ing in Absentia

Now I haven’t really done much outside the park while in Hershey proper besides concerts. The PA renfaire is my favorite. It’s mostly paved paths and has its own winery/brewery (with free samples inside). When I would go with my sister we’d leave the faire and go to chocolate world

Ответ для Liz - High and Inside

We're not so ren faire forward as a couple tbh (been before a few times and just not my thing so much and Rachel feels similarly)

Ответ для Blaze-ing in Absentia

This one is very different imo, they have themed weekends my favorite being time traveler where people dress as Star Trek, dr who, bill and Ted and more lol

Ответ для Liz - High and Inside

Yeah we vibe like people with those type interests but ultimately it doesn't do it for us weirdly

Ответ для Blaze-ing in Absentia

I get it, up there is also Intercourse PA a cute Amish town but I haven’t been in years so not sure what is still there

Ответ для Liz - High and Inside

Interesting do you know how much of that is like indoors?

Ответ для Blaze-ing in Absentia

The pretzel factory was indoors as was the canning company. Those were the main things I remember

Ответ для Liz - High and Inside

We stayed at the little hotel there

Ответ для Liz - High and Inside

My dad did kosher certification for a ton of pretzel factories in that area so it's not impossible I haven't been as like a little kid😂

Ответ для Liz - High and Inside

I hate the PA Renn Faire for the same reasons you love it 😂😂😂

Ответ для Liz - High and Inside

Hershey also has the Hershey Story Museum, which is the local history museum , which of course has large sections about Milton Hershey and the candy company, but also quite a bit about the community . They also have a little warm drinking chocolate tasting there that was fun to do.

The Amtrak goes to Virginia Beach. That's 6 hrs, granted, but no driving needed.

Ответ для Midatlantica

Yeah we're looking to drive so we can bring the dog

Berkeley Springs, WV!

Ответ для Pigeonaire

Please say more!

Ответ для Blaze-ing in Absentia

A natural hot spring running through a small town in the Appalachian mountains. I usually rent a house with a hot tub near town. The public outdoor spring is good for dipping your feet and letting the little fishes nibble them. There is an indoor Roman bath as well.

Ответ для Pigeonaire

Thank you!

Ответ для Blaze-ing in Absentia

Great Mexican restaurant, a good witch store named Portals. Not sure what weather issues you are thinking about but it sure is great there.

Ответ для Pigeonaire

Supposed to be raining basically everywhere unless forecast changes which prompted the search

Duck, NC

Ответ для Bob Davidson

Little further out than I think we'd prefer but what's good there that isn't weather dependant? I know nothing about the area

Ответ для Blaze-ing in Absentia

I’m remembering from eons ago that it was a pleasant place to hang out on the beach, but weather independent, I guess that depends on what you like to do. I went to grad school in Baltimore, so never had the funds to do anything fancy. I spent a lot of time wandering museums on the mall in D.C.

Delaware beaches!

Ответ для Kerry

Even with bad weather?

Ответ для Blaze-ing in Absentia

Rehoboth has horrendous traffic when it rains because of the outlets, so I honestly wouldn’t recommend Rehoboth unless you stay downtown closer to the boardwalk. Dewey is the next town over but is more a bar/live music town with not as much to do as rehoboth restaurant and entertainment wise.

Ответ для Kerry

Thanks!

+1 for philly and RVA, excellent museums, really good food (philly has a ton of SE asian food we don't have, indonesian food, tons of vegan and GF), bookstores and record shops and so on

Ответ для ennui matisse

Would love to hear more on all but food stuff if you feel like sharing!

Ответ для Blaze-ing in Absentia

richmond bookstores: brian's, agony, small friend has a ton of zines, richmond book shop is an antiquarian/out of print place. the vmfa is really amazing, lots of industrial design and furniture and cool stuff, fun sculpture garden. thrifting there rocks. fan-tastic thrift, diversity thrift

Ответ для ennui matisse

vmfa is free except for special exhibits, the philly museum also rules but there isn't free entry. tickets are good for the next day, so you could always go twice! and there's a rodin museum that you can do a lil package deal on entry for. philly aids thrift is fun to look through, has bins upstairs

Ответ для ennui matisse

i won't do food but coffee in both places is great, afterglow is my favored richmond pick, philly has persimmon for straightforward well done coffee and thank you thank you is the place to go if you want something that might change your life a lil bit. my favorite place i don't work at

Ответ для ennui matisse

philly is kind of baltimore at scale and richmond is like, smaller more obviously southern baltimore so it's easy to feel at home there but they're both different enough to give you a fresh lil experience

Ответ для Zeke’s kitchen appliances

What's there indoors?

Ответ для Blaze-ing in Absentia

Something I’d recommend is getting a hotel or whatever in Berlin, MD. Cute, kind of cheesy, historical small town, and driving back and forth to the island. It’s not bad at all.

Ответ для Zeke’s kitchen appliances

That's really interesting potentially, would love to hear more if you feel like sharing

Ответ для Blaze-ing in Absentia

like 15 minute drive back and forth. If you wait till after Labor Day the crowds and traffic will be much more chill. National Park entrance fee is a little pricey but it's generally less crowded, State Park fee is cheaper but can be crowded. Horses! Possibly bugs! It's great.

Pittsburgh is pretty cool

Ответ для Formerly FoxForceFlacco

Would love to hear details!

Richmond VA

Say more please!

Ответ для Blaze-ing in Absentia

I was coming to say Richmond, one of my favorite places around here. Good museums, great food, huge old cemetery to walk around, overall extremely chill vibes

Ответ для The Abominable Dr. Vibes

Mr E and I both have "graveyard nerd" shirts from Richmond 😅

Ответ для The Abominable Dr. Vibes

Thanks, would love more info if you feel like sharing!

Ответ для Blaze-ing in Absentia

I’m a museum lover, my favorites there are the Poe Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts; have not been to the new location of the Black History Museum but the old one was great; Chimborazo (huge Civil War hospital, now a museum/NPS site); Agecroft Hall (relocated Tudor mansion)

Ответ для The Abominable Dr. Vibes

Thanks!

Ответ для The Abominable Dr. Vibes

Oh wow I am adding so much to my to-do list next time i'm there! thank you!!

Ответ для The Abominable Dr. Vibes

Also mini golf in a Prohibition-era hotel (I forget the name) and the food at GWARBar is really great so long as you’re ok eating surrounded by foam-rubber corpses and so on

Ответ для The Abominable Dr. Vibes

omg omg @jostewart.myatproto.social

Ответ для The Abominable Dr. Vibes

I need to make it one day to the GWARBar, last time I was in Richmond was a synagogue trip to the historic synagogue (Congregation Beth Ahabah ) and Chimborazo

Ответ для Abigail Kabaker

While they’re known for their barbecue, they wildly have possibly the best vegan menu I have seen at a non-vegan restaurant ever. They make artichoke burgers!!

Ответ для dr. e. katherine

GREAT museums, cool architecture and stuff in the historic districts, I think the food is good too?? Been a while

Ответ для dr. e. katherine

3–4-hr drive, I've done it a couple times w/ Mr E driving (he goes down there for work occasionally). The old church neighborhood (i forget what it's actually called) goes HARD for Halloween if that's your thing

Ответ для dr. e. katherine

Thank you!

Ответ для dr. e. katherine

This would be for like next week theoretically

Ответ для Blaze-ing in Absentia

Oh lol it might be hot outside but the museums and restaurants etc have AC. Also you can usually get cheap last-minute hotel rooms just outside of town

Ответ для dr. e. katherine

And Richmond is quite diverse, inc. very Black. Which is pleasant. Also Baltimore's earliest(?) big-deal Jewish family moved up here from Richmond right after the American Revolution, so I bet there's a ton of cool Jewish history there although I'm not familiar enough with it yet (sorry)

Ответ для dr. e. katherine

I've got a very nerdy Jewish friend from Richmond so I can just ask him

Ответ для Blaze-ing in Absentia

Yessssssss (and if he has good recs, I'd be grateful to hear them!)

Ответ для dr. e. katherine

Food is less interesting to us but rest sounds great if you feel like giving specifics, very cool if not!

Harper's Ferry is real nice

Ответ для Bmoricuan

Yeah but it's very outdoors (plus we've done it twice recently)

Ответ для Blaze-ing in Absentia

Id then second Richmond

Harper’s Ferry? Philly?

Ответ для Recycled Sweater

Harper's ferry we've done twice already lol plus a lot is outside but what's Philly got? I grew up near there, have barely been as a tourist really

Ответ для Blaze-ing in Absentia

Philly has great museums. Theres the Mutter, the art museum, and the Eastern State Penitentiary. Plus good food!

I would say Harper’s Ferry. But depending on what you wanna do weather might need to be a thing.

Ответ для Eldritch Millennial

Yeah been there a few times and wouldn't want to go back this soon but especially not with bad weather

Ответ для Blaze-ing in Absentia

I mean. I love staying in Jersey City the training it into NYC.

Ответ для Eldritch Millennial

We go to NYC most of the time we go away so looking for somewhere besides there, even though yes it is the objectively correct answer to this question

Raleigh or the Blue Ridge or like Asheville isn’t that far. Also Bristol Tennessee/VA seems like a pretty cool place to go especially if you’re a race fan.

Ответ для Former Orioles Prospect (Traded)

Only Raleigh is especially close to 4 hours, what's there?

Ответ для Blaze-ing in Absentia

The state museums are all really cool, especially the natural science museum. There’s a great art museum and part of the mountain to sea trail runs close. There’s also a pretty great beer trail!

Ответ для Former Orioles Prospect (Traded)

Thank you!

Ответ для Dillon the Beaver (Cow Ripken)

Been there, would not want to go back in bad weather

Charlottesville is terrific

Ответ для Occam’s Shaving Cream II

Please say more!

Ответ для Blaze-ing in Absentia

Wonderful wineries, beautiful architecture, really nice nature within half an hour, great dining scene, really youthful vibe

Ответ для Occam’s Shaving Cream II

Thanks!
