I decided I was more interested in watching Barbie, and ended up never watching Oppenheimer 🤷🏻‍♂️

Anyone who's read the extraordinary 'The making of the atomic bomb' by Richard Rhodes will appreciate that no film could ever capture the scale of what Oppenheimer and the Manhattan Project achieved. But fwiw, this semiconductor physicist enjoyed it... And the lead actors were superb.

I like the cinematography, but I didn't see much in the way the story was told, except the ending at Princeton. My understanding of the whole era comes mainly from Richard Rhodes book, The Making of the Atomic Bomb.

I was disappointed it fluffed over so much of the science, but sort of expected it since it was a big hollywood movie. I was a confused by the relationship presented between Oppenheimer and Einstein because that wasn't my understand at all. Digging in after watching, it turns out the movie ...

lol... I'm *NOT* an expert on much and I have always felt privileged to have proximity to conversations between experts. I think that when spaces exist for that, everybody wins. Hope this thread is more fruitful 😁

I loved it. (CompSci & AstroPhys grad) Powerful and moving, though some of the inquisition scenes, after Oppenheimer is thrown away by the US government, like so much used chewing gum, did drag on a little too long for my personal taste(s). 👩‍💻🧠👩‍🔬⚛️☢️

I enjoyed it, and it seemed to do a pretty good job of the physics most of the time. It actually inspired to add a segment on nuclear physics to my intro class. My flaming hot take is that nuclear weapons are very bad and I wish they didn’t exist, but the physics really is interesting

It was very pretty, romantic about pre-war-physics to a degree that made me a little bit skeptical and then even if the red scare point would have been very interesting as a focus otherwise, everything after a giant prettily filmed nuclear bomb feels very empty somehow?

I went to the movie with a physicist. He thought it was very good, although he did say there wasn’t a lot an actual physics in it. It sticks pretty accurately to the biography “American Prometheus” by Bird & Sherwin. There’s only so much you can do in 3 hours, but what Nolan did was pretty good.

No too much physics in it - but I quite liked it. Are you interested in feedback in the sense of „what do physicists think about the physics“ or more like „what do physicists think as human beings“? Lol

I was massively disappointed by the very noticeably conventional explosion after all that anticipation, to be honest 😅 Reducing his wife's role from active participant with her biology training to just a wife, and using her jealousy to show more unnecessary nudity, was annoying too…
