great, another article where a book was pulled after AI claims. I hate AI, I do not use it, but I also hate that now I have to think about how to accumulate 'proof' that a work is mine from snout to tail. People are talking about recording themselves writing? How the hell?

I'll start getting to work on the signed, notarised affidavit from people I attended writing sprints with months ago and screenshots from WIP snippets I posted on Bluesky as part of a writer hashtag. 🙄

right? I often 'work into' a draft multiple times, rather than keep thousands of drafts. I mean, I do have some fresh drafts, but yeah. The idea that every process looks the same is ludicrous

If that's a concern for you, then save snapshots and date them - you do back up, right? ... right?

I do back up, yes. I have copies saved to my desktop, the cloud, and on a usb drive

Date them and don't overwrite them - good backup practise anyway so long as you have storage space - and that's your ongoing evidence of writing, and of rewriting, sorted

First thing I do in most writing sessions is save a copy of the file with today's date and that way I have backups if I decide I've fucked up.

One of the reasons I like Scrivener is, it does that automatically so you can roll back.

I'm utterly non-linear, a mad mind mapper, so the note card structure really suits my way of thinking.

That was the 1st thing I played with and could definitely see the appeal. But I tend to do hand written bullet points and scribbled potential scenes in a notebook, then type those up. Then in editing pick key sections, rewriting by hand, then inserting back in as replacements.

Best thing to do is find some automatic process - buy an app if you have to - and tag your writing drive for regular automatic backup. The system will do it for you, the images will be tagged by date, and it won't overwrite any of them until your storage is full. If you use a Mac, by a Time Capsule

Then it'll just work in the background and you only have to pay attention to it when the shit hits the fan - drives crash, computers burn out, it's a thing - or you need to produce an answer to some shithead claiming you use AI

I believe a history of drafts should normally suffice. But I share the sentiment. Humans shouldn't be required to prove what they created is truly theirs.

The current version of word actually keeps an access log of time spent etc. So very easy to prove that way if you use that software.
