It was thought that the introduction of cats was the major factor in the species’ extinction, but after revision it was concluded that the island’s cats didn’t become feral until the 1970s, and now other hypothesis suggest human predation and habitat loss may have been the cause instead

About 50% of mortality is due to bycatching, and thought to be the main cause of the species’ decline Alongside that, its small breeding range (exclusively the Balearic islands, Spain) makes them vulnerable to introduced predators such as cats, rats, and genets Via BirdLife International

*Although at least 100 birds were released to the wild in 2018, the IUCN stipulates re-introduced individuals must have produced viable offspring in order to count as mature individuals. Hopefully new assessments will reveal the population has grown! Via BirdLife International
