I kept thinking about "Sorcerer" while I read this. Shared motif of miserable men doing sisyphisean/herculean labors for unimpressive amounts of money in a fever-dream environment that's spectacularly indifferent to their survival. Similar hypermasculine highbrow-lowbrow thing going on.

I thought this was about mitch McConnell and got hopeful

I assumed this was going to be kind of a slow, abstract polemic about human nature and the limits of knowledge, but instead it is a filthy-gritty 70s SF thriller with a twisted sense of humor and great characters. Beautiful translation, Le Guin foreword is a treat. (Some gross misogyny tho, ofc.)

Please write this book; i promise I'll buy it
