Peat burning in the Peak District too. The intense part of the fire is over but at this point the peat will likely smoulder until rain drenches it.

Genuinely asking, I don't know the answer. I've heard anecdotally from firefighters that the density of heather in the Tintwistle fire has been making it burn hotter and fiercer, thus increasing chance of underlying peat burning.

Agreed, that's the only way to prevent this in the long-term. But since full, deep rewetting takes time, what do you think of the argument for some controlled burning to reduce surface fuel loads while restoration is under way?

I agree overall, though there are reasons to think weather plays a longer-term role (camp volume in Calais is similar to last year, just with less successful movement to Britain, for example). Personally don't think we can reliably unpick causes until end of 2026 at the earliest, possibly even 2027.

Just to understand, are you implying the last 10 days were good weather? They really were not... Other than a tiny window on Saturday morning, it's been 10+kn of northerly winds and >1m of swell for a while.

These are the settings I've been using for the date of your image, while the heat signature is interesting it really doesn't capture the dry ground and burn scar as well!

Can I ask what layers you are using for Sentinel monitoring? I've tried both True Colour and the Wildfire presets, but find that the Wildfire one doesn't show the dry ground/burn scars as well as this, while true colour can be a bit hard to parse for readers.

Don't know about wetland restoration given what is burning is higher/steeper/drier moorland. I've seen a lot of calls for more grazing to remove brush.

Yeah, this isn't the fault of muirburn. Also, it has been banned on English moorland if there is 30cm of peat below it. Interestingly the worst fires in England are on RSPB-managed areas with no winter burning at all...

That's an interesting one, I wonder if it being in an MOD area it is captured in the data sent by fire services. I see Dorset and Wilts say they were not able to attend and it was for MoD to deal with. Thanks for flagging.

Addendum: Tintwistle, Cairngorms and Harlech are the most reported. A few other large fires from July: Conwy: 200acres, evacuations. Kelfield, Yorks: 35acres Clare, Suffolk: 100acres Bridgnorth, Shrops: 98acres Roden, near Telford: 88 acres Brentmoor Heath, Surrey: size unknown, burned for 5 days.

Having 3 simultaneous wildfires that each cover several hundred acres is very serious! And that's not even counting the wildfires in the 10-100 acre range!

Cost a fortune, have to be hired from specialist companies plus there simply aren't enough to tackle the number of simultaneous large fires around the country.
