The Southern Plains and parts of the Lower Mississippi Valley are going to join in on the summer fire season as flash drought sets in. Pretty common in developing El Niño years, but hopefully it’s not a repeat of 2023.

"homes labeled as 'extreme' flood risk experience a 3.3% price discount and stay on the market for a week longer" Sure hope those risk labels have verifiable methodology, considering they "remain pervasive across different FEMA floodplain designations" 🙃 www.nber.org/papers/w35516

I-95 is closed in coastal Georgia due to a new wildfire in Camden County. It missed the rain today and blew out as multiple outflow boundaries passed through. South Georgia has seen a recent re-emergence of drought indicators due to the hot and dry July.

Not quite the intensity we saw with the late June fires in Utah and Colorado, but NAEFS shows near record winds at 500 mb, while the EFI indicates high-end gusts in areas with established fires.

Even the tiny Caribbean island of St. Croix is on fire. A wet winter and early spring followed by flash drought, with Saharan dust and trade winds enhanced by El Niño is the perfect recipe for wind-driven fires in the region.

Atlanta has that northwest wildfire smoke glow to it this evening. Also more humid than usual - reminds me of my cornbelt days.
