It’s not a common case, and I see it most often in manufacturing where there’s some old device that works but with only a 32-bit driver. Usually it’s a few systems that can be isolated relatively easily.

Finally, we know how important app compatibility is to you which is why we take it so seriously. We are mindful with every release that we want to improve security, and performance while preserving app compat. We also made Windows Server 2025 the easiest to upgrade ever. Two of your top requests.

Windows Server 2008 R2 & later are 64-bit only. If your app is already running on these OSes, then you've already made the transition to running on a 64-bit OS!

Q: What about 32-bit Windows Server 2012/2012R2? Anything special we should know? A: There is no 32-bit version of Windows Server 2012/2012R2. Windows Server 2008 was the last 32-bit version of Windows Server that shipped 15+ years ago.

1. If the app communicates with ancient hardware, it more likely has a 32-bit driver which won’t work with 64-bit Windows Server. You need 64-bit drivers to run on 64-bit Windows.

Q: Is there a way to know for sure if my 32-bit Windows Server app will work with 64-bit Windows Server? A: The best way is to test it, but here’s a good question to start with: “Does this 32-bit Windows Server app communicate with a specific piece of 15+ year old hardware?”

Again, Microsoft has been shipping 64-bit Windows client for ~20 years & most people don’t realize it. The notable compatibility exceptions were old printers, scanners & hardware devices that had 32-bit only drivers & the manufacturers didn’t produce 64-bit drivers (~2007).

Q: Does this mean Windows 64-bit editions can run ANY 32-bit app? A: Not 100%. The crux of the issue is drivers. 32-bit Windows requires 32-bit drivers 64-bit Windows requires 64-bit drivers You cannot mix & match 32-bit drivers w/64-bit operating systems & vice versa.
