A frequent early collaborator of the late Oliver Jones (including Oliver's debut album). Biddle had a huge impact on turning Montreal into a jazz hot spot, and sometimes acted, for instance in Bruce Willis' The Whole Nine Yards. Daughter Stephanie and son Charles Jr both respected Quebec performers.

Born OTD 100 years ago, Canadian bassist Charlie Biddle, d. 2003. Born in US, after WW2 he become one of many black musicians who found a home in Canada, moving to Montreal and staying there for the rest of his long career. /2

Born OTD 100 years ago, actor/acting coach James Best (b. Jewel Franklin Guy), d 2015. Widely used character actor in film and tv, his most famous role was Sheriff Coltrane in The Dukes of Hazzard. As a coach his pupils included Quentin Tarantino and Lindsay Wagner.

I hadn't made that connection! You're right, that is odd. Then again maybe he thought confining the daughter to this bit uncredited part was revenge on her only recently deceased father.

His comedies included Moonstruck, the Cold War satire The Russians are Coming, the Russians are Coming; and the Marisa Tomei/Robert Downey Jr romcom Only You. Jewison (who was not actually Jewish despite his surname and directing Fiddler on the Roof) died at 97 in 2024.

Also born OTD 100 years ago, the Canadian director of one of Paul Burke's films, The Thomas Crown Affair, Norman Jewison. Where to begin with all his major releases across many genres, from Jesus Christ Superstar to Rollerball to In the Heat of the Night. 1/2

Born OTD 100 years ago, TV and occasional movie actor Paul Burke (d 2009). Notable roles in The Thomas Crown Affair and Valley of the Dolls and later on TV's Dynasty. Best known for 60s series Twelve O'Clock High and Naked City (dvd set of the latter has been my treadmill-telly for several years).

Born OTD 100 years ago: British actress Patricia Cutts. Assorted film and TV roles through 50s and into early 70s include The Tingler (1959) and a notable uncredited bit with one line in North by Northwest (also 1959), below. D. 1974 following 2 final appearances on TV's Coronation Street.
