Elizabeth LopattoI love how mad some critics are about a classicist wilding out. my friends, we should make more adapted classic texts — I don't care if the films are good, the classicist drama ALONE will be excellent viewing
My favourite bit so far in the build-up to the Bayeux Tapestry exhibition has been the projection of Tapestry scenes onto the White Cliffs of Dover plus a heartfelt "merci". tinyurl.com/ytm9hrzj
Cambridge classicist Dame Mary Beard and Slate film critic Dana Stevens joined us today for a great conversation about 'The Odyssey'. wnyc.org/browse/shows...
Another little Odyssey-related gem! Did you know that one favourite decoration for the Roman emperor's dining room was the scene of Odysseus and his men blinding Polyphemus. The dinner party from hell? I discuss this intriguing choice in my emperor book tinyurl.com/262vbr2b

Charlotte and I turn a classical eye on the Odyssey movie, not to quibble about archaeological detail, but to ask what more you can get out of the film (for better or worse) if you know the poem. Pedants revolt but not too pedantic!!
This walk through The Odyssey with Mary Beard and Charlotte Higgins is brilliant. Learning so much. Recommend. open.spotify.com/show/37LpnhQ...

I'm early for an appointment & listening to Mary Beard & Charlotte Higgins' pedantic reaction to Nolan's Odyssey, partly about the film's very different moral framework, which reminds me of the poem's omissions: no hint of women war captives in the poem, either. 1/ @instantclassicspod.bsky.social
Beard's essay opens, "I want to start very near the beginning of the tradition of Western literature, and its first recorded example of a man telling a woman to ‘shut up’; telling her that her voice was not to be heard in public." My essay on the Odyssey, Andrew & Tristan Tate, misogyny then & now:
