I'm not exactly a fan of the IP laundering or current market externalities and I specifically don't use them to write: wilkinson.graphics/blog/2025-08... This is exactly the type of response that Klabnik talks about in his post (linked in mine). Its like this subject makes the entire world insane.

I think both of these examples shine because we have objective metrics to look at for both programming and math in the form of tests and proof assistants. This _doesn't_ exist for a lot of other knowledge work and so using LLMs for anything requires a lot of approval burden.

In about ONE year we went from copying and pasting generated Python snippets to significantly automated coding agents that take instructions, gather context from a codebase, edit and implement requirements, and test their work.

In a few years we've gone from ChatGPT being used to convince mentally unwell people they'd discovered new math to telling Claude to "do a breakthrough" and having it actually prove the Jacobian conjecture false.

There's a sort of bifurcation in the world right now where LLMs and the agentic tooling built around them has inarguable utility in the math, science, and tech fields... And if you're not in any of those fields it's probably relegated to "better Google" and "makes bad small business posters".

Are they good as secondary factors?? I always thought the point was to replace the "something you know" purely with "something you have" and just call it a day? For me this has always ignored the threat model of "dump my laptop in the lake oops"

So far the only place I'm using this is NPM where they seem to be used as 2FA, oh yeah and in order to log into NPM on another device I needed to burn a recovery token. Good stuff.
