August has become less sunny at Heathrow over the years, quite markedly so in the final two thirds. In recent years the month often feels autumnal, relative to previous Augusts

Is July getting sunnier? At Heathrow average available sun hours have increased from 39% to 41%. There's a notable increase on many days in the last third of the month but overall not much change.

The 12-month rolling rain total is running about 87% below the annual average but it has been lower at this point. In 2022 it was running at 74%

The current drought has just gone top 4= in the list back to 1900. If there's no rain today it will match 1976.

28.6°C the high today. I've been having a look at the @metoffice definition of a heatwave and that makes it the 34th day locally of >28°C, 6 more days than 2018. There's also been 5 heatwaves, one more already than both 2018 and 2022.

Even in the leanest July ever Seathwaite in the Lake District managed 136mm, over 3X the average for July rainfall in East London. There's your solution to hosepipe bans right there. Water companies have paid £78 billion to shareholders since 1989, money that could have paid for a pipeline!

Not surprisingly July was totally devoid of thunder here. So just 2 thunder days in the last 5 Julys. 31 fine days and no thunderstorm - wonder what King George II would make of this summer?

The mean for July finished 22.1°C, 3.6°C above average. A new record. Rainfall was 0.15mm, the driest in the series to 1797. Another new record. Sunshine at Heathrow was 325.4hrs, second only to the 1911 record. WHAT A MONTH!!!
