In my one day back at work between two weeks of annual leave, on top of firefighting my inbox with a backdrop of four tweens playing upstairs, I have accepted a manuscript for publication subject to minor amendments, and *had* a manuscript accepted following minor amendments 🎉

Going to uninstall bsky for a while because spending time with my face directly in the torment nexus firehose, is, it turns out, too much rage and grief for one body to hold

Wellllll this is upsetting and disappointing but of course absolutely predictable

New CILIP website is a mess of AI slop images. Check out the images of senior professionals and try and imagine the prompt that generated them. All backed by walls of fake books that look like the ones sold by the yard to furnish pubs www.cilip.org.uk/learn-develo...

I see there's an alarmist press release being uncritically reproduced by media outlets about the scary autonomous capabilities of AI tools just a day after reporting about the huge financial losses of the companies that own these tools again it is almost as if this a pattern that repeats itself

Pub quiz winners once more, a margin of one point which @roadstersuntan.bsky.social finds dissatisfying and which @danny.scot will absolutely take

Would've been quite the 'digital experience' for that kid

Mark Zuckerberg's assistant at Meta, Josh Felker, who was responsible for Meta's "digital experiences for kids," was arrested after admitting he tried to sext a 13-year-old during an undercover sting. nypost.com/2026/07/20/u...

I'm sorry but "humans make mistakes too" is such a weaksauce justification for AI/LLMs being an acceptable part of an academic workflow that I use it as a proxy for whether or not to take the speaker seriously on the topic. Same as "no ethical consumerism..." when applied the wrong way

It scares me how quiet academics and support service workers are on the risks of AI deprofessionalising and undermining labour etc. Even in national union meetings. People are far too chilled/resigned/checked out/distracted by other crises imo

Neil Selwyn

Why are academics using GenAI to write articles, grade assignments, compose emails and a lot of other tasks that they would/should otherwise be doing themselves? A brief summary of our anonymous survey of over 200 academics' 'grey uses' of GenAI ... researchwhisperer.org/2026/07/21/a...
