I don’t even agree with all of Emily Wilson’s review but the idea that she has to be grateful to Nolan for boosting her book is such BS. She’s not a little author he uplifted out of obscurity with his adaptation. She’s not even the author of the Odyssey. She’s an academic who translated it.

The parallels to early 20th century imperial Japan are already very on the nose, but if you don’t speak japanese you may miss that the SDU’s title is just one kanji away from WWII suicide attack units (including kamikaze pilots). 特攻隊 (tokkoutai) = special attack unit vs. 特防隊 (tokuboutai) = SDU

Kinda wild to see HNDR fans get uncomfortable at the characters dressed in military-inspired fashion that’s more recognizable for them, but not have clocked the military aesthetics in their in-game class armor. Both seifuku & gakuran were explicitly based on European military/naval uniforms.

I do appreciate that Takumi has a confirmed coffee shop order (iced café au lait) (cute)
