It's extremely interesting how common a concept it is in Japanese fantasy media while not really catching on elsewhere until more recently. I think my first personal exposure to the concept was in Final Fantasy Tactics Advance.

More to the point, you tend to reach a point where it's clear who's going to win, but it's going to take another 100 turns to actually reach the victory condition, so you can either slog it out or just call it done and start a new game.
