Politics, backpacking, travel, photography, & all-purpose snark. Looks like I picked the wrong election year to quit sniffing glue

Don't threaten me with a good time

Aaron Rupar

Tuberville: "If we don't straighten out this country's voting and immigration system, we're not gonna make it. It's gonna be over. I'm gonna go back to Alabama and hey, we might build a 30-foot wall around our state."

Going back at least as far as Shakespeare plots have relied on the device of implausible comic (or tragic) misunderstandings, and, like, how did they even know that was a thing when Bluesky was still hundreds of years in the future?

Not since the days of Durst have we seen a story involving Jeanine Pirro where she wasn't the worst character

It's a minor thing (counterpoint: precision in language is never a minor thing) but it bugs me when somebody says (as Jeffries did recently) that Social Security/Medicare "aren't entitlements, they're earned benefits". That's...what entitlement means, in this context.

I just want to say that I wish only the best for Mitch McConnell and encourage him to take as much time as he needs for his full recovery, years if necessary.

"One side prosecuted J6ers, the other side tried to prosecute ICE protestors...nobody has clean hands!"

Tillis admits Trump is weaponizing the DOJ during his speech announcing he'll vote for Todd Blanche: "Maybe it's a little bit more intense in this administration than the last one ... I'm going to support Mr Blanche's nomination"

Gym Jordan ignoring abuse, what are the odds?

I wish he had mentioned (maybe someone else did or will) that a district court judge found the entire scheme to be fraudulent. Seems like committing a fraud upon the court should be disqualifying in itself.

Aaron Rupar

Whitehouse: "Next we get to this crooked slush fund Trump family tax amnesty scam. We've got these two new pieces of paper. One signed only by Blanche, one not signed by anybody. Neither of which has any legal effect whatsoever. They are decorative. Can you trust Todd Blanche? I do not."

Are you talking about the guy who made all his coders print up all the code they had written over the last week just to show they were doing their jobs?

Max Kennerly

The richest person in the world, an avowed white supremacist, today again posted "the next step is getting rid of 'source code' entirely and just making an efficient binary directly with AI" because he has no idea how anything works, not even the basics of industries he is in.

Related: democracy is a niche interest, because Republicans are against it

John Scalzi

Bluesky is a "liberal bubble" because fascist chuds can't get traction without algorithmic assistance and because people here trained themselves to block "debate me" trybois the instant they roll up

Early on those people were saying just let it rip through the population so the survivors acquire "herd immunity", and even after it became clear that people could be infected multiple times--that infection did not bestow immunity *at all*--they were still peddling that stupid shit.

Tressie McMillan Cottom

I’ve been writing a counter narrative of shutdowns that has me revisiting media from that time. And let me tell you, the only other option was everybody die. So yeah.

In other words, Cornyn and Tillis rolled over for an entirely spurious "order" that has no legal force, and actually compounds the offense for which Blanche got slapped in court.

Tom Hilton

It should be noted that the order currently has no legal basis, because Judge Williams nullified the "settlement" that supposedly authorized it. (Trump/Blanche have asked for a stay pending appeal, but it's unclear whether she'll grant that, even assuming the order is appealable.)

022

Reminder: one party to a settlement can't unilaterally change the terms of the settlement. This is just more confirmation that the "settlement" was never a settlement at all, and that the "lawsuit" was never a lawsuit, because the "opposing" parties had the same interest from the start.

🚨NEW: Todd Blanche’s new order rescinds the May 18 Anti-Weaponization Fund—but quietly leaves the May 19 IRS immunity settlement intact. Instead of rescinding it, the accompanying memo reaffirms DOJ’s interpretation, arguing the immunity applies only retroactively and only to the parties involved.1/

My approach to Democratic primaries at this point is to vote against whoever has the strongest opinions about Gaza/Israel, on either side
