This carved stone plaque was found in St Francis' Row in Cashel, and it is believed to be the sign for a tavern that was known as The Cat & Bagpipes, that once stood on the main street. It may date to as early as the 16-17th century, and offers a glimpse of Cashel's social life from centuries ago

With audiences gripped by the retelling of the Odyssey, it made me think how amazing it would be to see a film of Ireland's great epic – the Táin Bó Cúailnge. So in today's Monument Monday, we go to Louth to visit a monument that plays a key supporting role in the dramatic conclusion of the story!

If the heat is getting a little too much, may I suggest escaping into the cool gloom of a medieval church? This is St Nicholas’ Church in Galway. It was constructed in around 1320, on the site of an earlier church. Though it has seen many alterations, it remains an evocative & atmospheric place.

The Rough Fort • Derry This fine example of a ringfort can be found close to Limavady. It is a counterscarp rath, meaning there is an additional low bank outside the enclosing outer ditch. It enclosed and protected one or more round houses built of post & wattle. #Archaeology 🏺 #SpéirGhorm
