I looked for those this spring, heard lots (2 subspecies), had them close enough that I could watch the vegetation move but never saw a feather. And I thought they were one of the easier rails to see,

Few winter this far north so we generally only see them at their finest.

They qualify as a rare bird in Anchorage so we get no credit but I did see one yesterday

They're on the way back.
