They won't start with banning birth control. First they'll lie about it. Then dictate who can prescribe it, use it, fund it, in what forms, and for how long. Suddenly, your doctor won't call you back. I know this is what they'll do because it's what they're doing to transgender healthcare right now.

This goes in general, it's remarkable how many of the anti-trans crowd become *obsessive* - it feels like this peculiar bigotry becomes all consuming for an unusual proportion of people who feel it, I am not sure why.

I think we agree that he doesn't have the chops to rise to Kubrick's level, but the themes he crams in invite the artistic evaluation. And he does get described as an auteur by many film people (can't say I care much what he labels himself as he drifts to sleep each night)

She doesn't refer him as "his Black best friend", but the non-white characters as "versions of the Black best friend", a well known racist trope in cinema

I suspect we'll disagree on whether Nolan thinks of himself as an auteur and whether he's trying to match the great filmmakers. I do agree it was a great popcorn movie!

Yeah, see what you're saying, but as a work of art in comparison to other films with such artistic ambitions it seems to crumble under Wilson's evaluation (as entertainment, it's fantastic and a great entrée into the material). Much of the discourse seems to be avoiding the substance of her critique

not sure it sustains it. lots of the criticism seems to be going towards Wilson's critique without actually engaging with the content of her article

What's wild with these critiques of Wilson's essay is that they don't engage with her actual criticisms (the dialog does suck! the woman (and men) are terribly flat! the philosophizing is puerile!) & just go on about how dare she say her opinions. And knowing enough academics I'm sure those are hers

it's so self-involved. some blocked people tend to, idk, terrorize people. too much to imagine what it would be like to have them contact you once a month with their demands to be unblocked

Um, lot's of people have complained about the lack of sex (including Emily Wilson, the translator of the version the movie is putatively based on). The Odyssey is filled with sex - it's a main plot driver Calypso (in the original Odyssey): why don't I get to kidnap and rape like the men?
