If the governor of Kentucky had any guts he'd appoint McConnell's replacement and dare the Gang Of Pedos to send McConnell in his place.

Clean indoor air is helpful against disease all the time, not just episodicly "in a pandemic". We treat drinking water *all the time*, not just during cholera outbreaks. Until we get over this medical/reactive mindset, airborne pandemics will continue. Put engineers in charge of public health!
Prof Christina Pagel2. Clean indoor air: helpful in a pandemic and good for health and learning at all times (and not just in schools but other buildings too) 3. Effective public health measures: testing, contact tracing, support for isolation, communication, etc 10/12
Since there are no corporations in free markets, it is entire consistent for the state--whose statutory intervention in the free market by way of the Companies Act or similar is what allows corporations to exist--to regulate corporate behaviour for the public good.
Oliver"Starting July 19, 2026, the European Union officially banned large fashion companies from destroying unsold clothes, shoes, and accessories. Instead of sending perfectly good products to landfills or burning them, companies must now donate, recycle, or repurpose them." via No one Cares
This is a good use of "AI": brute force known plain-text attack on a legacy data format. Having grappled with similar problems, having an automated side-kick able to do the grunt would would definitely be helpful.
Jens von BergmannEver worked with Beyond 20/20 IVT files and enjoyed it? Me neither. Until today. The canivt package parses IVT files and converts them to parquet or CSV, enabling the use of IVT files in modern data workflows.
An even worse idea is that corporations can exist in free markets. They can't. A corporation is a license from the state that gives its holder statutory protections from free market mechanisms, particularly the courts. Companies don't exist in free markets, so the state should regulate its creation.
Max KennerlyAmong the worst ideas floating around is that "the free market" will naturally achieve desirable results for society. No, it won't, not even in theory, much less in practice. Markets don't optimize "good for society" unless you make them.
And if your first thought was "Yes, but..." rather than sympathy for the victims, I've got some bad news for you.

Effective air filtration will stop aerosol spread disease. Everyone knows all respiratory infections are primarily spread by aerosols, despite ongoing denial by non-scientist cranks. But adequate filtration with low noise requires well-designed systems, like this one.
Dick ZoutmanFor my home I had to switch to North Box air purifiers that are whisper quiet and run at full speed at 30dB. aidankepo.wixsite.com/northboxsyst...
Why do a study without critical metrics? Because the people doing the study are not engineers or scientists. They are MDs and public health professionals, who have no training in science or engineering.
Dick ZoutmanNo air quality measurements!Zero CO2 or PM2.5 monitoring in any room, intervention or control. So unable to determine if the results means “filtration doesn’t reduce infection” or “the air purifiers never meaningfully cleaned the air.” Why do this study without measuring these critical metrics??
This is why engineering interventions should not be tested by MDs and public health PhDs with zero knowledge of fluid mechanics or HVAC: they will test the wrong thing and incorrectly conclude that engineering interventions they failed to test don't work. They are a public health hazard.
Dick ZoutmanDose matters! Bedroom units ran at 60 m³/h on the quietest “sleep setting”. In a typical single room that’s roughly 2 air changes/hour. Aerosol engineering consensus generally wants 6+ ACH for meaningful pathogen load reduction. This tested low-dose comfort settings, not adequate filtration.
Watching this, I'm reminded that in fact if not in law New York is a city-state. I'm reminded of that because Mamdani is a statesman: willing to speak clearly and powerfully about both moral realities and real, practical, legal constraints on his administration's power.
Mayor Zohran Kwame MamdaniBenjamin Netanyahu is a war criminal.
THIS. I've been self-employed or run my own company in Canada for decades. It's been possible because I never had to worry about my kids health care, or my own. If I'd been in the US, I could not have done that and I'd be poorer and unhappier today. Social democracy is capitalism at its best.
William B. Fuckleysimilar to Zohran doing small govt from the left with slashing red tape, I think he’d be a good messenger for the capitalist case for social democracy: yeah you the low six fig middle class household might lose some perks, but imagine if you could start a business without worrying about your meds
