I have sworn off all Woody Allen nonsense but I thought “maybe Midnight in Paris” wasn’t as insufferable as I remember and within three minutes it was deeply deeply insufferable

So happy for Mackenna Goodman. Her work is a balm for the soul

You would think it would be the left who would staff a beloved news show with boring, unlikable would-be-knowitalls but no...once again the right wing edges us out.

"They know this is TV, right??" a CBS News senior staffer texted me about this news. "I hate it here," another CBS reporter said.

You know a lot of us have been critiqued by classicists without also having made $1bn off a movie and we’re doing fine, so I’m not worried about Nolan at all.

The Howard U thing is not just about checking emails or paying bills—it’s 500 students—that could be 20% of the incoming class. That’s a massive amount of students. Something did not go right

It’s weird to see people attacking “The Literary Canon” in 2026 as if it hasn’t already been replaced by a bunch of three paragraph passages and a multiple choice question set generated by AI. There’s no way forward without defending canonicity in expanded form

Great production of Troilus and Cressida at the Utah Shakespeare Festival. Not an easy play to put on

We had to fix our outdoor sprinkler system because one extremely tiny sprinkler head meant to water a single container blew its top and created a thirty foot arc of water. May all home repair items be so slapstick

Going to see Troilus and Cressida soon and re-read the play. It is very very good.

Drop everything and watch Blue Heron (on Criterion). Make room for intense sadness

Favorite retro touches of Blue Heron: the darkroom and the dangerous thrill of jumping on a trampoline with no net

Watching Blue Heron on Criterion

Excited for new Marilyn Hacker work!

This is easily the hardest hike I’ve ever done. Worth it but with a few challenging turns

It's exciting when a poet whose book you love starts a journal and accepts some of your work for their first issue.

It won’t be a 7/4 fireworks record if he doesn’t shut up until 7/5

Thomas Jefferson has been dead for 200 years. He would like about current US: -State of US winemaking -amount of universities and books -select corners of the internet Would dislike: - oafish monolingual president - shoddy neo-classical fake arch - spread of equality to nonwhites and nonmen
