The occum’s razor explanation is he’s incapacitated but alive. No one from the GOP can force his removal, he can only be removed by a 2/3rd vote from the Senate, which Dems wouldn’t do because that helps the Republicans. (1/2)

The Senate has no proxy voting, so you’re right, the margin on committees is down one republican. which returns me to my origo question, why would Dems want this seat filled?

But that’s the weird thing… he’s so senior, he has chairmanships and vice chairmanships of committees and subcommittees, so his absence is both blocking other republicans from moving up in power and making the committee work harder. I don’t get the rush for the minority to get a (ahem) warm body in.

I am genuinely confused… McConnell hasn’t voted since 6/11. Thune Is playing a man down. Pretending McConnell is fine and leaving the seat essentially empty is a win for Democrats, while a special is a gamble that could bring in a republican for a few months. Am I wrong?
