(I’m not disagreeing with you, by the way! I’m just saying, when people talk about the history of how we divided sports by gender, that book opened my eyes to the fact it’s a history with more twists than I realized, and also made me realize there’s a lot I just took for granted.)

(There are also other ways to control for variables that tend to track with gender — if height or weight are what’s key for success, you could divide competitions up by height or weight instead of gender. A swim meet divided by height might actually be more fair to, e.g., shorter competitors.)

I think some of that is sports-dependent though — and as Barnes points out, we built certain sports around characteristics that correlate with gender. (Men’s gymnastics/skating vs. women’s are very different sports!) And there would be ways to reorganize what we prioritize, if we wanted to.

It gets one degree more interesting than that — according to Katie Barnes’s “Fair Play”, at least, the initial expectation for groups like NOW after Title IX was that sports would eventually be co-ed, and the gender split would be temporary until women’s programs built pipelines for athletes.

I swear to Christ most parents of autistic kids aren’t like this, and yet writers for places like the Atlantic never seem to find us. (We’re easy to find! You can just come to the swings at the playground on days when it’s pouring rain!)

A few years ago The Wiggles added four new Wiggles and for, like, a year, all of them had to wear shirts with their names on them, including the original four. Like if you tuned in to “Siskel & Ebert” and there was a third guy and their sweaters said “Gene”, “Roger” and “Dave”.

I was about to share the story of the Daily Show writer who wore a bright red button down shirt and was immediately asked “hey, when is show choir practice?” and never wore it again.

I do not think I had registered until now that the target audience for these movies literally was not born when they began.

It’s fine! It just feels very much like binging the first three episodes of a prestige cable show that’s backloaded a lot of the interesting stuff for the end of the season.

Finally watched the 2021 “Dune” movie and was not ready for the fact Zendaya is in it for 20 minutes at the end and that’s it.
