this is my first rodeo, actually

Likely true. I enjoyed it overall but with significant reservations. The performances were my biggest. I spent a good chunk of the movie wondering what the direction was. Felt like everybody was in a different movie. FWIW I've heard Holland is better on a second viewing, but I've only seen it once.

True, Steam does a much better job, though it isn't shy about showing big games when they have in-game events, like Apex and Warframe now. So I do wonder how different that aspect would be if Steam had Fortnite, Minecraft, Roblox, Rocket League, etc. all with new events constantly.

Bronze Age + "the face that launched a thousand ships" both had me wrinkling my nose. The casting didn't help, either. Admittedly took me out hearing Spider-Man call Catwoman "Mom" before sailing off to find The Punisher.

Realistically, is there any solution to how stagnant these are? Feels like it's choking gaming as a medium but it's not like foul play or whatever; it's just most consumers gravitating toward what's easy. You'd expect the popularity of some to wane over time, but... how much time?

343i tried to modernize Halo with Infinite but it didn't work. I thought the open world was a great idea, grappling hook was fun, etc, but it just didn't come together and the story was dreadful. 4 is maybe my favorite game in the series so I'm excited to see them try, but they're so constrained.

I agree, it's very difficult, but look at Nintendo with Star Fox. They're trying to bring it back, so they start with a remake of a game that's already been remade. Nostalgic for the old heads, new entry point for everyone else. As for where they go from here, I honestly have no idea.

Imagine if they had radically changed things though. The Halo diehard crowd is extremelyyyy finicky. Even Bungie got a ton of hate when Reach introduced abilities like sprint. They never even gave 343i a chance. If they truly shook up the campaign, people would act like they'd desecrated a Bible.

I didn't have any trouble with that aspect unless it felt like you were supposed to, like people yelling on a boat while being battered by an intense storm. The loudness here is so painful because so much is really high-pitched and sharp, like swords and spears clanging.

Felt this. Normally not an issue at my theater but wow, this one hurt. Plugged my ears about a dozen times. Convinced me that I should bring my concert earplugs to Dune Part III. I remember Part II having some scenes with very loud gunfire. Nice earplugs will lower the volume without muffling.

That said, you're completely right that tons of people have moved to phones for basically everything and already live in that world. But it's also just scary how ownership of *everything* is steadily getting out of reach for most: phones, computers, consoles, media, houses. What future is that?

All good. I agree in large part. I think people increasingly have been looking at the prices on everything going sky high, digital + streaming, etc and thinking soon we'll be sold a future where you don't even own your computer. So Apple announcing leasing options for computers is like "well, shit."

Yes, but classically those deals are for phones, not computers. This gives them license to just go ahead and keep raising prices and push more people toward leasing. Wealthy people will still buy outright, no problem, and everybody else will pay a monthly fee to Apple in perpetuity.

Lack of availability is another huge part. The harder it gets to buy physical, the fewer physical copies will be sold. Even for big games, you basically need to buy physical online now, which means waiting for delivery, so unless you specifically want physical, you'll buy digital. Downward spiral.
