My brother, who watches the anime as well, has said it is a *very* faithful adaptation and a good "primer" for the anime if it were to be watched. (the LA adapts the manga, so it cuts all the anime filler episodes and arcs that are technically not canon)

The 70s, as far as Trek licensing goes, was kind of a Wild West. But, honestly, I understand where Paramount is coming from with this because they have to protect their IP and bringing the hammer down heads off any potential small-time lawsuits which cost the same time and money as a big lawsuit.

And then they are the "bad" movies that actually aren't bad, just not as strong as others. Like how Final Frontier is good, actually. It's basically a feature-length TOS episode, complete with Kirk monologue spelling out the moral of the story. It's all about the Kirk-Spock-McCoy brotherhood.
