But as not everyone will make that choice (I do recognise the value of companion animals for many people) that means cats will continue to exist. Just in smaller numbers and therefore with reduced total impact.

I'm not arguing for either. I've already said don't just release existing cats. But the thread is about choices individuals can make to reduce their impact, and not owning a cat, or not replacing an existing cat when it dies, it one such choice. 1/

Sounds like another good reason, beyond their collective slaughter of hundreds of millions of birds and other wild animals, to stop keeping cats as pets.

But if life has indeed moved on, it's to a world where the care system is even more short of cash than it was in 2010. Not sure how going from a mandatory care levy to a 'more voluntary approach' helps with that.

Capitalism does not equal competition. Capitalism is solely about extraction of as much profit as possible from resources. Competition frequently hinders this (as in this case). It's why we have regulatory bodies and laws to enforce competition.
