That's the case, which is why I didn't say anything about them. You'll see @clhellisen.com saying they never use them, neither do I; I switch off the one in Word because it's an annoyance and usually wrong. But saying "spell checkers are AI" is pushing an already difficult subject too far.

Nonsense. "AI" does not just mean "anything computerised," it refers to generative large language models which are being used as a substitute for human judgement and creativity. Spell checkers are task automation, nothing more, and are not based on IP theft or being used to replace human effort.

This is why I resist using the term "AI" - it's a poorly defined term that has been grabbed as a marketing buzzword and now misused for everything computerised. Spell checkers are not generative LLMs, the technology we object to; they're not even machine learning tools, just task automation.
