can I just say how much I really respect and appreciate Ron Wyden

if DSA talked about data centers a little bit less Glonzoishly maybe I'd actually participate in local politics more as it is there really doesn't feel like there's a place for people like me who want actual policy solutions and not parroted zitronslop
Portland DSAThe climate crisis is accelerating. Weβve got a Mayor + some city councilors running cover for Zenith Energy. Weβve got a state legislature captured by corporate $ facilitating a data center build out for these energy sucking monsters. Letβs get serious, shall we?
as someone building a MUD with these tools this is so funny and insane. like our game is very old, we have custom game and scripting engines which are pretty complex and powerful, and even when we're refactoring huge pieces of sloppy 30 year old C code we have a hard time hitting a $20/mo cap.
Lumi mean, all snark aside, running a MUD is cool but if you're spending thousands a month on increasingly arcade code palaces to generate code for your entirely different code palace to push patches out to a third code palace which runs patch notes by a dude named rhialto you may be missing the point
this looked real gnarly from the Fremont bridge really hope no one got hurt
Bryan from Stumptown SavingsMassive fire in NW Portland right now.
there were definitely early focused efforts to shift public opinion but they were more focused on copyright maximalism. karla ortiz raised ~200k from small artist communities for copyright lobbyists specifically, for example, and popularized a lot of that sentiment/fears in those spaces.
conputer dipshitI donβt really do conspiracy theorizing based on what sounds cute but Iβd believe it if there was a bit of evidence. it doesnβt take any special effort to make people believe things they really want to believe. it can also backfire by inflaming opposition. itβs a risky move
I've met multiple Spanish speakers in Portland that rely on their phones to translate when speaking to people who do not speak Spanish or to translate English text. Normies are already embracing these tools bc they're useful, I think it's actually increasingly fringe not to.
alyI am routinely surprised by people who do not think live translation, semantic search, and computer vision are big deals for non-knowledge workers. These just functionally did not exist 10 years ago.
yes and the language used to villify addicts being applied willy-nilly to every conceivable activity, completely unreflectively, by people that would insist they are progressives if pressed, is pretty dogshit to see on here all the time actually
Elixir of ProgressIt's worth noting that it's very disappointing to see Hank Green talk that way and folks take it seriously. Because this "dopamine addiction" stuff is trash science. It's Dr. Phil level bullshit. You scrape it like stale gum off the bottom of the same school bus seats you find Gladwell stuck to.
this has been true for years tbf
vacchagottaAll these content creators are deathly afraid of their own audiences
It's going to put a lot of artists (career, not "comms are open") in a really bad position professionally. Same as any artist that refused to learn Photoshop. That & many being convinced to want to hand more power over IP to the greatest enemies of art in the world makes me fear for future artists.
post malone ergo propter maloneboy, it seems not great that artist backlash against genAI poisoned things for creatives across the board
my wife grew up in rural PA and it literally is just sprawling fiefdoms where the most important thing is what your last name is and thus how powerful your family is. then add the religious communities that have been overrun by the most toxic kinds of evangelical
Sarah TaberMost of the land in most farm counties is owned by 1-5 families. They run the place like their own personal kingdoms. There is SO much resentment and straight-up fury about this in rural areas. The fact that no political party's even really trying to speak to it is wild.
we have this sword in Avendar called Falgamir the Yellowblade which has a silly gimmick that makes you run away from things in combat that you can get as a prize from something anyway I just saw a player typo it as "Faglamir" and instantly heard this play in my mind & will forever now when I see it
you do not have to Hand It To Anthropic, they suck, but they are doing a legally required thing. people citing Internet Archive's nondestructive practices should note that IA *lost their copyright lawsuit*. this is important because you have to be mad at the right thing if you want to change it!
mlf.reminder that the "anthropic are shredding books because they're evil" story is ~disinformation, because the book shredding is as far as anyone can tell *required by US copyright law* and not, in fact, something anthropic chose to do because they're evil.
