This is predictably where we end up when we only have national transportation planning (car dominated) and no national land-use planning (eg the coordination of commerce/industry/housing/transpo/agri/greenspace/etc.). My masters in regional planning from 20 years ago just makes me depressed now.

Many years ago I traveled to New Zealand, came home to Western Mass and told the city planner I was going to write a memo about getting some public toilets (I served on the planning board at the time). Noooo that was such a pretty place (I lived at 16th and T and used to spend a lot of time there in the early 2000s). Sometimes it was scary, but mostly just people playing pickup soccer, hanging out.
