Not sure if I ever knew this detail before, but nugget from my research: Nixon offered the judge in Daniel Ellsberg's trial the FBI directorship -- the judge's "life's ambition" -- if he ended the trial soon (to avoid, I assume, details emerging of the Nixon-ordered break-in to E's psych's office)1/
The judge obviously didn't accept -- he actually disclosed it to the court and then dismissed the trial with prejudice. But I'm struck by how...Trumpy Nixon was. We've had the same problem before, it's just that we had better guardrails and more principled actors across the government
