I don't disagree, except that I'd say whatever rules of the market and competition were once in place are now mostly broken, which makes this phase of capitalism feel much more like feudalism.

In short: The way my home country abolished the law should be treated as a political scandal and not as an example for why it wouldn't work in California.

As a consequence, the ruling parties never bothered to update the law, most likely due to lobby pressure. This means that the law has since not been applied even though it's "on the books" and it is *explicitly* mentioned in the German constitution.

As an aside, the author mentions Germany as one of the examples of countries where the tax was abolished because it didn't work. For Germany, this isn't true. Our Supreme Court ruled in 1995 that the law needed to be reformed because it wasn't being applied strictly enough to real estate owners.
