We’re following the case closely. Share this post in solidarity with the Kichwa people of Puerto Franco in Peru. 🤝

This case shows how conservation and carbon offsetting projects can reinforce, rather than resolve, existing dispossession. The tribunal's decision could set a landmark precedent – not only for Puerto Franco, but for other Indigenous communities across Peru whose land overlaps with Protected Areas.

On top of that, a REDD+ project has since operated there, generating millions of dollars through carbon credit sales to companies including Shell and Total Energies – the community says it was never properly consulted and has not benefited.

Let us be clear: A state cannot impose a Protected Area over #Indigenous land and then use that same Protected Area to deny their rights! The Cordillera Azul National Park was created without recognizing the community’s rights.

This case reflects a pattern we keep documenting through our #DecolonizeConservation campaign: Protected Areas and national parks get created on top of Indigenous lands – without recognizing the rights of the people who were there first, restricting access to the lands and resources they rely on.

After decades of campaigning, the completion of the physical demarcation comes as a major victory in the fight to protect the territories of uncontacted Indigenous peoples. 💪

But land grabbers, loggers, and powerful politicians have been putting on a lot of pressure to try to get their hands on the territory. We at Survival, alongside Indigenous organizations and their allies, have spent decades pressuring the Brazilian government to get the demarcation done.

This is a crucial step for the uncontacted Kawahiva people, who rely entirely on their forest for survival. The demarcation should’ve happened decades ago, when the existence of the uncontacted Kawahiva people was confirmed in 1999.

They flagged reports that the local police involved have a history of allegations of torture and ill-treatment, and they're demanding Pranab's immediate release, alongside a full suspension of the luxury tourism project until affected communities give their free, prior and informed consent.

UN human rights experts spoke out too – warning that arrests like this "can have a chilling effect on civic space and discourage others from speaking out against abuses."

His "crime" was fighting for Adivasi land rights against a five-star @hyatt resort project planned near Kaziranga National Park. He and four others now face a long list of non-bailable fabricated charges.

It’s a violation of international law, and of Eramet’s so-called “sustainability” commitments. When in Europe, Ngigoro also sought meetings with several German car manufacturers that might be sourcing nickel from his people’s territory. But none of them would meet with him.

Ngigoro, who was born uncontacted, is fighting to protect his people’s land and rainforest. A massive nickel mine part-owned by French company Eramet is systematically destroying their home and threatening the survival of uncontacted Hongana Manyawa people.
