I'm seeing supporters of a heavily academic curriculum say why moving away from it *won't* work. But don't we have a responsibility to explain the plan for young people who are currently being told they have failed? We can't just prioritise the academic high attainers.

An argument I do have time for is that school should be about developing a love of learning rather than preparation for work. But atm with all the curriculum and accountability constraints are we really developing a love of learning? And also *why isn't it possible to love vocational learning too*?

Whenever I talk to new teachers I tell them how education basically goes in a ten year cycle and, if you stick firm to your values, once every ten years people will say you were doing the right thing all along. ⬇️

This. When I talk about writing I always explain how the job is about throwing a huge % away. As the saying goes, you have to 'kill your darlings' as an author.

It's interesting to me that nobody seems to be talking about the arts as a vocational choice as well as things like plumbing. Is it possibly because we subconsciously 'approve' of the arts on an academic level whereas we write off other hands on, practical vocations as 'just skills'? 🤷‍♀️🧵 1/3

If we aren't willing to explore ways of making an academic education more engaging for disaffected learners, and we're not willing to countenance alternative pathways in learning either, what's the actual solution to those learners who are currently switching off from school and learning? 🧵 1/3
