I think this is *why* esports (in general) are so competitive, though. The risk of injuring yourself is so, so small. You can hit a new peek day after day! Though, injury does happen! I remember some Korean OW players retiring due to wrist injuries.

Dropping training a little to do a TT means sacrificing potential future performance, so most athletes will go all in on events like this and guess their potential based on previous splits and other metrics (estimating times based on vo2max, etc).

Generally, you'll do time trials on your own to gauge your performance, but only meets/competition/races "count." You will also typically manage your workload/training cycle leading up to an event, so chances are, you'll be at your best when you're leading up to a competition.
