Carlito Oliveira Junior looks at industrial technology and slavery in the brickworks of 19c Rio de Janeiro. Like Matheus, he challenges the traditional ideas from economic history as a hinderance to industrialization, stating there was "modernization through slavery, not in despite of it."

Matheus Sinder (Universidade Federal Fluminense) presented on slave-based manufacturing in nineteenth-century Rio de Janeiro. He notes that Brazilian manufactured goods were a key instrument in the illegal transatlantic slave trade of the later nineteenth century.
