I work at the University of Toronto (but speak only for myself). I love the heck out of my two kids and my wife. In between, I write. He/him

Second Cup is *right there* and a lot more Canadian than Timmies these days. Even Starbucks for all that it's anti-union and American-owned at least doesn't drape itself in Canadiana and pretend to be a vital part of our national fabric while supporting attacks on our trans siblings.

Ed Macdonald

It’s not just shitty coffee and bad food. The American-owned Tim Hortons is politically vile and insists on being on the wrong side of history. Also, if you’re an adult who just loves Harry Potter, fuck-off, you dick. Grow up. Adulthood is not optional. #transrights #timhortons #bigotry #harrypotter

This is a compelling essay that I want to mull over. Right now I *think*, in the end, that it doesn't quite convince me of its thesis. But I very much appreciate that it takes a close look at the language of the story, takes it seriously, and considers what Le Guin's choices *mean*.

Typebar Magazine (Issue 10 Out Now!!)

"Those who treat Omelas as a utilitarian allegory wish to view the child as a concession, a 'gotcha' moment illustrating the ethical quandary alleged to inhere in all joys and comforts. But such a reading is erroneous."

I love any blue cheese, but especially a cambozola.

Tom & Lorenzo

People on Bluesky sigh and talk about The Discourse as if it were something required of them instead of something they opt to partake in, day in and day out. You really don't have to. Post about your favorite cheese

My Italian-Canadian in-laws absolutely believe the story that the slightly dated slur for Italian people is an acronym for "WithOut Papers". It's not.

Merriam-Webster

‘SOS’ is NOT an acronym for “save our souls.” ‘Golf’ is NOT an acronym for “gentlemen only, ladies forbidden.” ‘Posh’ is NOT an acronym for “port out, starboard home.” ‘News’ is NOT an acronym for “north, east, west, south,’ OR “notable events, weather, sports.”

God, are grifters still hyping chelation therapy for autism? The anti-vaxx autism conspiracy theories are still a thing so I shouldn't be surprised. But people were talking about chelation when my kids were first diagnosed in preschool and they're adults now. That's really sad. IT'S A SCAM.

Tal Lavin

im reading a book about the history of arsenic, so i looked up chelation therapy (one of the only treatments for arsenic poisoning), and the first thing i see is the mayo clinic being like "this does NOT work to cure autism" like....... maha/fake medicine is one step away from humors & leeches

We all get that Homer almost certainly wasn't a single individual, right? He's not up in the Elysian Fields cheesed at Nolan. The Odyssey is the product of a centuries-long oral tradition of countless poets who changed it over time until it was eventually codified. It was ALWAYS an adaptation.

The Jays would *never* is all I'm going to say.

I'm afraid to get my hopes quite that high. But it *is* pretty clear that his majority win in 2025 was about the last time Doug was having fun in the job.

Yeah, I’m beginning to think that this is Ford’s last summer as Premier of Ontario.

When @shaunduke.net, @reading1000lives.bsky.social and I did our @skiffyandfanty.com podcast about Moore and Campbell's FROM HELL, Daniel, who is NOT a regular comics reader, acknowledged having some trouble following it in parts. Reading comics, like reading prose, is very much a learned skill.

Josephine "Megalith" Riesman

I don't know who needs to hear this, but... comics, as a medium, is not "easier to read" than prose, and acting like children who prefer comics to prose books are dumbasses is a manifestation of the worst kind of Puritan-work-ethic authoritarianism

My wife and I went out for dinner last night and I asked our server to confirm that all the produce was Canadian or at least NOT from the US before I ordered anything with lettuce. Happily, he could confirm that the restaurant wasn't using US produce. Much more difficult to do that IN the US.

Michael Hobbes

How the fuck am I supposed do this at a restaurant www.seattletimes.com/nation-world...
