This was, is, and always will be a brilliantly shit illustration of how stupidly self defeating business people can be. Forgoing the universal positive of a staff self-training on their own time, because of the vague fear that one in a hundred might make some money.

I think it has more to do with primacy bias and the fact that their methods of escapism are no longer safe than being in community with people, but I also try to see the best in folks. In all likelihood it’s a slightly different mix of these factors in each person.

(Not to say that you’re wrong or anything. I just think we’re taking different approaches to the same goals here, and I just wanted point that out. :)

Calling people “NPC’s” has done immeasurable damage to our perception of other humans, and it will continue to do so for as long as you don’t confront it. Yes, you personally. It sucks and you shouldn’t have to, but we can’t afford to not confront this anymore.

I fear this may just be Americans. North Carolina has a very similar issue - we have a large portion of drivers who act like they’re the only person on the road, and like everyone else is NPC’s.

I think videogames will eventually hold a very specific niche in the study of history, and that should be understood, celebrated, and preserved. Hell, GTA4 is already a time capsule to a bygone time full of blackberry phones and hybrid fast food restaurants. Imagine how important that’ll be in 2030.

I must say as a habitual contrarian that I believe video games to *kind of* be a right, but in the same way you should have a right to look at the Mona Lisa or an old bronze-age potsherd in a museum.
